The Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards 2019

Now in its ninth year, the Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards was founded in 2011 and has grown in popularity ever since. The event recognises the outstanding courage and bravery of children throughout Yorkshire and receives generous sponsorship from local businesses, most notably the partners of St James’s Place.

Across two age groups children are recognised for achievements within five categories: Outstanding Bravery, Fundraiser, Special Recognition, Young Carer and Sporting Achievement.

Our wonderful hosts for the night were local legends John Hammond and Christine Talbot.

Following a drinks reception, some great entertainment from the ‘Little Big Band’ and a sublime Indian buffet it was down to the main event of the night, the Awards.

Each category was introduced by a short video which detailed the children’s stories. There was more than the odd tear welling in the eyes of hardened Yorkshire businessmen as story after humbling story was told. Wonderfully compassionate children who have cared for disabled siblings, children who had been in and out of hospital their entire lives without any thought of self-pity, each was greeted on stage with rapturous applause. Each gave a short and moving acceptance speech.

Finally it was time for Laura’s turn, the Special Recognition Award reserved for the ‘Pride of Yorkshire’. Christine Talbot introduced the situation with great sensitivity, a true professional. A short and incredibly moving video clip narrated by Laura’s Aunty Lorraine told the story of Laura’s courage, bravery and selfless determination to help others.

As Annette, Mark, Katelyn and Lorraine made their way to the stage all 700+ guests rose to their feet for a standing ovation that felt like it would never end. An emotionally charged room listened in silence as Annette made a short acceptance speech explaining how very proud the family are of all of Laura’s achievements and how fitting it is to be launching a charity as part of Laura’s loving legacy. The award was presented by Rugby League superstar Eorl Crabtree (he’s a big lad!)

It was a true privilege to be present at such a wonderful night. We’re so proud and humbled by all the children that were recognised, especially our Laura.
